Director

Agnès Varda

When Agnès Varda passed away, it was hard to believe that she had surpassed the age of ninety. She was so fresh and vibrant that even in her latest years, her films attracted audiences, and she always talked about her plans for upcoming projects. Yet, Varda’s name remained best known for her remarkable films: Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962) and Vagabond (1985). Both films are portraits of women, a genre in which she excelled, given that she was a strong member of the French New Wave and its first generation. Even if her film Jacques de Nantes that was dedicated to her husband the great filmmaker Jacques Demy was a masterpiece, Varda’s exceptional portrayals of women remain her greatest talent. This is why her documentary about Birkin, with whom she shared a strong friendship, is exceptional.
