Stage, opera, screenwriter, director, and actor Roman Polanski was born in Paris in 1933, raised in Poland, and attended art school in Cracow and film school in Lodz. His feature film debut, Knife in the Water (1962) won the Critics’ Prize at Venice and was nominated for an Oscar. His first UK feature, Repulsion (1965), earned the Berlinale Silver Bear, while Cul-de-Sac (1966) won the Golden Bear. Chinatown (1974) took a Golden Globe for best drama and an Oscar for best original screenplay. Tess (1979) won three Oscars for cinematography, art direction, and costume design. The Pianist (2002) won Cannes’ Palme d’Or, seven Césars, two BAFTAs and an Oscar for Best Director.
